We have described how responses to light stimuli, generated by a BINARY CHOICE GENERATOR can be used as a measure of mental load by measuring an occupied subjects= spare information handling capacity : pressing one of two buttons as a response in a (binary) choice between a high or a low light.

Responses to aural stimuli can be used in a comparable way :
pressing one of two buttons as a response in a (binary) choice between a high or a low tone.
The response unit ( 2 push buttons, but foot pedals can also be used) is placed in a convenient position
.With Air Pilots this can be on the top left of the control column
.With Air Traffic Controllers foot pedals can be used
.The author adapted this method for special use in experiments he conducted with Air Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers at Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam), both in flight simulators and in actual radar controlled instrument flights at night
